MAKING A SWITCH
Helping families navigate the transition to SCCS
Changing schools is a big decision, and every family's story is different. Whether you're coming from public school, another private school, or homeschooling, we've helped many students and families successfully make the transition to classical Christian education.
Our admissions process is designed to get to know your child, understand where they're coming from, and help you discern whether SCCS could be a place where they will thrive.
Wherever You're Coming From, You're Welcome Here.
Students arrive at SCCS from many different educational backgrounds. While every family's story is unique, here's what many notice as they make the transition.
Public School: You may notice smaller class sizes, a slower pace for deeper learning, close relationships with teachers, and an intentional emphasis on Christian formation.
Another Private School: Students encounter a distinctly classical approach centered on great books, thoughtful discussion, integrated learning, and the cultivation of wisdom and virtue.
Homeschool: Families often appreciate the joyful classroom community, consistent daily rhythms, collaborative learning, and close partnership between parents and teachers.
How We Support Your Transition
Our goal is to understand your child's strengths, identify where they may need support, and help your whole family feel welcomed into the life of our community.
Thoughtful Academic Placement
We use age-appropriate assessments to understand your child's readiness within our curriculum and determine where they are most likely to thrive. If some additional preparation would be helpful, we'll work with your family on a plan to help your child begin the school year with confidence.Personalized Recommendations
Depending on your child's needs, we may recommend summer review, tutoring, additional practice, or other resources to help build a strong foundation before the school year begins.A Welcoming Community
Transitioning to a new school can feel overwhelming, but you won't be navigating it alone. From caring teachers and welcoming classmates to opportunities to connect with other families through our Mentor Family Program, we intentionally help new students and parents become part of the life of our community.Caring Teachers
Our faculty intentionally welcome new students, helping them learn classroom routines, build friendships, and adjust to the rhythms of life at SCCS. We want every student to feel known, encouraged, and supported from the very beginning.Partnership with Families
Throughout the admissions process and beyond, we communicate openly, answer questions honestly, and work closely with families to support each child's growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
A few of the questions we hear most often from families considering making the switch to SCCS.
-
Absolutely. Many students come to SCCS without previous experience in classical education. We don't expect new students to arrive already knowing our curriculum or classroom rhythms. Our teachers help students learn how we approach discussion, reading, writing, and other aspects of classical learning as they become part of the classroom community.
-
Every school approaches curriculum a little differently, so it's normal for students to arrive with strengths in some areas and gaps in others. Our admissions assessments help us understand where your child is academically so we can recommend the right placement and identify any preparation or support that may help them begin well.
-
That's one of the most common questions we hear.
Students entering grades where Latin is part of the curriculum are evaluated individually. Depending on your child's background and grade level, we may recommend summer preparation, tutoring, or other resources to help build a strong foundation. Many students begin Latin after transferring to SCCS and do very well with the right support.
-
Being new can feel intimidating, and we take that transition seriously. Teachers and students intentionally welcome new classmates, and our Mentor Family Program gives incoming families a connection to a current SCCS family before the school year begins. Because our community is small and students share so much of school life together, new students have many opportunities to build relationships and find their place.
-
Supporting students is an ongoing part of life at SCCS, not just something that happens during the admissions process.
Our teachers know their students well and provide attentive, individualized support within the daily rhythm of the classroom. When a student would benefit from additional help, we partner closely with families to determine the most appropriate next steps.
For students who need more targeted support, SCCS also offers optional student support services in areas such as reading, executive functioning, social skills, and academic enrichment.
